Mushrooms

Uganda bee keeping

Biking in the country side i met to young guys dealing with beekeeping. I couldn’t resist to stop.

They have about 9 families. Most of their beehives are on the side of the road empty for advertisment. The other are in the bushes in the middle of the forest. They squeeze the honey out of the wax by pressing it manually. They have no specific tool other than a smoke maker, gloves and mask. Sometimes they gather familys in the forest by cutting a trunk in two. The queen is takem appart from the rest of the family by a metal net you can see on the fourth photography.

bee keeping – traditional way –

Some photo documentation about traditional bee-keeping technique in the countryside of western Kenya.

Most of the beehive are just a trunk open in two. For easy access they are put in a very remote place…on the top of a tree. Sadly, once you get out the honey it is very difficult for the family to survive. One of my friend is trying to develop top bar beehives. Soon the first updates.

Otherwise I’ve seen very few bee-keeper around. It is difficult to access small honey producer. There are a few bigger cooperative or supermarket honey mixed with something not natural.
